Dolby® ProLogic is an expansion of ANALOG Stereo
signal into full surround sound for all six speakers (standard stereo "RCA"
L/R cables) with any standard stereo audio.
Dolby® Digital is direct read of DIGITAL Stereo signal, only
obtained using DIGITAL INPUT (Coaxial or Optical cable) with audio media
containing Dolby® Stereo.
Dolby® Digital 5.1 is direct read of five-channel+subwoofer
DIGITAL signal for direct feed to the six individual speakers, only obtained
using DIGITAL INPUT (Coaxial or Optical cable) with audio media containing
Dolby® 5.1.
THX, DTS and AC-3 are other formats for multi-channel
Digital Audio.
-
"Input source" is the device providing audio directly into the speaker
or surround system.
-
"Audio unit" is the speaker or surround system main component with
primary terminals.
-
"Audio components" include DVD, LaserDisc (LD), CD-ROM, Cassette
Tape, Satellite Tuners, Game Players, VCR's, TV's, Record Turntables, or
any other media device which may be connected directly to a primary Input
source.

Audio cables: Stereo or Mono Audio Jacks
|
Note: Surround Sound units have multiple Input
source Selection Switches which allow multiple Input sources. |
|
No Power |
No power from wall socket. Check for socket wall switch and/or try
different socket.
The power cord is not plugged in.
The power switch is not turned ON.
Cables are not fully plugged into audio modules.
|
No Sound |
Speaker wires are not connected at speakers, or audio unit terminals.
Input source (DVD, LD, TV, VCR, Game, Computer) is not connected to audio
unit.
Input source is not turned ON.
Input source output volume Muted, or Minimized.
Audio unit Master Volume switch is OFF, or Minimized.
Input source Selection Switch (applicable models) is different from cables
connected to audio unit.
Optical cord is strained at connection (digital optic fiber models only).
|
No Sound
some Speakers |
Audio jack is not plugged in all the way, only half way.
Individual speaker wires are not connected at speaker, or audio unit terminals.
Wrong cable (mono speaker-to-speaker cable) being used instead of stereo
cable.
Source audio output is Mono, but stereo cable is being used (get Mono-to-Stereo
adapter or cable; sound is still Mono but all speakers will work).
Change MODE selection (Surround Sound models only; Center
and Rear speakers are not active for all Modes).
|
No Sound Front Speakers
for some Modes
(Surround Sound systems only) |
Left/Right Front and Rear Speaker wires reversed at audio unit output terminals
(Rear
Speakers are not active for all Modes).
|
Low Sound |
Input source volume is Minimized.
Individual speaker control volumes are Minimized (applicable models).
Some or all computer source volume controls are Minimized.
|
Distorted Sound |
Input source volume is Maximized.
Input source connection is a Speaker Out versus Line Out. Change
to Line Out, or reduce volume on Speaker Out to very low level from Input
source.
Audio unit Master Volume is Maximized (reduce to about 95%
or lower).
Audio unit Subwoofer Volume is Maximized (reduce to about
95% or lower).
Computer source volume controls are Maximized for some sources not
known to be active (default setting for some soundcards is
automatically Maximum even for audio sources not in use or inactive).
Open
Advanced
Volume Controls, Select Mute ALL, Save
setting; then unMute
ALL and activate only individual audio sources actually intended to
be used, Save
audio settings (never set any audio
level above 95%).
|
Humming Noise |
Input source is stereo, but Mono audio jack cable is being used.
Audio cables could be damaged or have short circuits.
Left/Right output from other audio components is crossed going into Input
source.
Too many audio components connected to Input source at the same time.
Turn OFF unneeded other audio components. *If problem
continues, you may need to unplug certain components from overall system
and obtain separate selection switches to select and deselect specific
components from the main Input source (even when OFF some electronics audio
circuits allow a certain amount of drain on audio signals which
can weaken or distort overall audio output in combination with other components).
|
Shrill Feedback Noise |
An audio source is feeding from output back into input at the Input source
component. Check all component cables in and out.
A microphone input source is ON. Mute Microphone volume.
Check computer Advanced Volume Controls: Options, Properties, Recording.
Select ON only those sources required (deselect or mute Microphone,
and
External
Line In as needed). Also try deselection/mute of
Midi and
Wave
selections
on Playback audio settings.
|
Left/Right
Sounds Reversed |
Left and Right cables are crossed between Input source and audio unit input.
Left and Right cables are crossed from other audio components going into
Input source.
|
Left/Right sound same |
Original audio is MONO.
Mono output from the Input source (check settings).
Computer AWE64: access Advanced Volume Controls, Select 3D Stereo Enhancement,
Save
audio settings (AWE64 default setting is MONO).
|
Bass Volume Low |
Original audio has poor Bass levels or no Bass at all.
Check Bass setting in computer Advanced Volume Controls.
Bass individual Volume control is Minimized.
|
Treble Volume Low |
Check Treble setting in computer Advanced Volume Controls.
Treble individual Volume control is Minimized.
|
Remote Control
Does Not Work
(applicable models) |
Remote Control batteries are dead, or very weak.
Distance to main unit is too far (Max distance ~7meters).
Angle of reception at main unit is too oblique (Max angle about 30-45º)
Remote Control is overheated by exposure to sunlight (store in shaded location).
